Power Dynamics in Sales

Blog 22_image
Was chatting with a close friend who handles accounts for TikTok. He shared something that struck a chord with me – salespeople, especially when dealing with big corporations, tend to unconsciously shift the power dynamics. 🙈

They somehow become more subservient, almost… seemingly desperate for the business.

Why? Because the client is spending big bucks, and they don’t want to lose the deal.

But here’s the kicker: this shift in energy doesn’t just stop at the negotiation table. It trickles down to project management, customer satisfaction, and even your ability to ask for referrals.

The client starts to feel like they’re doing you favors by giving you the business, rather than engaging in a balanced negotiation. ⚖

And because you’ve set this frame (YES, you), they naturally expect more. They want more. And you’re left scrambling to meet these inflated expectations.

The entire frame is, for lack of a better term, completely f***ed. The reality is, the power dynamics should be balanced.

Most of the time when clients come to you – they need you just as much as you need them, if not more. It’s the desperation for the sale that skews this balance entirely.

And it’s not just in tech. I see this everywhere.

🏡 In property, agents become servants to their clients because they’re desperate for that fat commission check.

📚 In education, institutions become subservient to parents because they’re desperate to retain students.

💼 In SMEs, promising whatever they can to secure a bigger sale.

These dynamics stick like glue, and become a nightmare to deal with later on.

The deliverables and expectations keep rising, and you’re caught in a never-ending loop of over-promising and under-delivering.

So, what’s the solution?

Set the frame PROPERLY at the start of the conversation. Make it clear that this is a partnership. It’s supposed to be a win-win. You bring immense value to the table, and so do they.

Don’t mess up the frame, because once it’s set, it’s incredibly hard to change. And trust me, you don’t want to be caught in that loop.

Keep the power balanced, and you’ll find that not only do your negotiations go smoother, but your entire relationship with the client improves as well.

That’s how you close deals without losing your soul. 😇
